Kitchen Volunteers' Meeting - 18 Mar 2021

Present: Indy, Raquib, Liz, Vicki, Jemika

NDIS:

  • Vicki: carers are bring NDIS clients to TSS; creates problems when kitchen is very busy
  • Carers don't always supervise their client well e.g. they leave clients in the kitchen by themselves

Fixed kitchen roles and numbers:

  • Liz: proposes: two cooks, one person on coffee and one on the outside ("maitre d'")
  • This exclude any new trainees - they are extraneous to the "four person" limit

Training of new volunteers:

  • Ru is overloaded when she has to cook and train new volunteers at the same time - needs another experienced person on the day.

Free shop:

  • Liz: running really well (general agreement)
  • Remark: Ru cleans it out on Thursdays
  • Less desirable items are placed under the tables; no items should go into office space as this is a shared area
  • Some people are taking the best items in large quantities
  • Action: Vicki will talk to "offending" people

"Screening" and induction of new volunteers:

  • Liz has been talking to new volunteers to determine their reliability and level of skill
  • Ru will help in this process

Flexible volunteering arrangements:

  • Liz is training a new volunteer who will only cook in the morning and leave before service.

Volunteer forms:

  • Action: post electronic copies on the wiki (Kevin)
  • Paper copies in plastic drawers on benchtop outside kitchen window to office

Discussions in kitchen:

  • Liz: topics of conversations and their intensity can be distracting - should be avoided in the kitchen
  • Misha: some conversations can be triggering to patrons - need to be mindful

General kitchen:

  • Sort out kitchen appliances - keep accessories and appliances together
  • Action: talk to Belong re. mens' toilet door not working

Airkeys:

  • Download Airkey app
  • Ring Fahana at Belong reception between 9:00am and 2:00pm

Relationship with Belong:

  • Liz was spoken to very rudely by Trish C - commented on by Vicki
  • Kevin: there seems to be general apprehension about relationship with Belong at the last meeting.

Funds:

  • About $3500 "under the bed"

Body positive pool party:

  • Will use kitchen for baking on Saturay the 27th March

Craig van Oosten vs. Jon Griffin:

  • Facebook exchange: (Ru)
    • Craig and his family are regulars at the kitchen
    • Jon has posted videos of Craig shouting in domestic dispute; his language was offensive and "triggering"
    • Craig and Jon both run (competing?) online radio stations
    • Jon has threatened to run a story, presumably indicating that TSS are promoted by "racists"
  • Ru: not our role to counsel patrons about their personal views
  • Indy: happy to confront racism at TSS
  • Misty: we are not involved in Craig's personal life
  • Decision:
    • We will not respond to Jon
    • Liz and Kevin will talk to Craig in case of escalation

Art projects: (Liz)

  • OzCo and Arts QLD grants are coming up in the next few months.
  • Can develop five (?) projects as a group
  • Liz and Kevin will write grants
  • Major resources: kitchen, garden, free shop, our volunteer community, ...
  • Liz is talking to politicians to promote TSS; Ru suggested Michael Berkman

Coat drive: (Ru)

  • Proposal: everyone brings in winter clothes for swap

Film night: (Misha)

  • Show 11-minute documentary about local gardening projects in a related space (general agreement)

Meeting process:

  • Not always conclusive: votes, decisions, action points not always attained
  • Minutes can have private content - how to publish?
